RECAP: Dinos capitalize early in win over Heat

Calgary, AB - The road was not kind to the Heat women's basketball team as they fell on Friday night to the Calgary Dinos by a final score of 66-43. The Heat will have to wait at least one more night the find that elusive first win of the Canada West season

A strong first half would put the Dinos in control as they led at the break 34-15 and UBC Okanagan could never really climb that deficit or find their footing on the offensive end. With the win Calgary gets their 10th win of the year (10-5) which has them sitting in a strong position with the postseason looming.

First half (34-15):

It was a slow start on the road for the Heat as they were held scoreless for nearly six and a half minutes in the first quarter and would trail 16-0 early in the game. A Claire Meadows timeout would allow the team to find a little rhythm however and they held U of C to just two points in the final four plus minutes and would trail 18-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams would struggle with turnovers in the first frame as the Calgary had nine in the first frame while the Heat had eight of their own.

The two teams combined for just eight points through the three plus minutes of the second quarter but back to back makes from behind the arc extended the Dinos lead to 25-10 midway through the frame. Calgary would build this lead going into halftime and at the break the Heat would trail 34-15.

The Dinos shot 46% from behind the arc in the first half (5 of 11) while the Heat were just one of ten. Anastasia Evans led the way for UBCO in the first half with seven points off the bench while Emma Johnson had six of her own.

Second half (32-28):

A much better effort in the second half for the visitors was started with a 8-2 run to cut into the Dinos lead. The UBCO offense continued to play well for the team, scoring 20 points in the third quarter but the sizeable deficit remained going into the fourth as they trailed 53-35.

Both offenses would come to a screeching halt in the fourth however as neither team scored for four minutes during the middle of the final frame. The Heat would score just eight points in the final frame to close out with a 66-43 loss at teh Jack Simpson Gym in Calgary.

Team stats:

- The Heat's offense would shoot just under 28% for the game (19 of 68) while the Dinos were able to shoot 40% (24 of 60) from the field which included seven made three-pointers.

- Both teams would struggle in turnovers throughout the game as the hometown Dinos had 29, while the Heat had 23 of their own.

- Calgary was able to take advantage of the Heat's lack of size as they had 52 rebounds compared to just 33 for the visitors.

Players of the game:

- Third year guard Emma Johnson finished with a double-double for the Heat as she had 12 points along with a game-high 10 rebounds

- Forward Anastasia Evans had her best game in a Heat jersey as she finished with nine points on just eight shots from the field.

- Calgary was led by Brianna Ghali who had a game-high 18 points on 13 shot attempts along with a team-high nine rebounds.

- Every player except one scored for U of C as they also had eight players with at least four points.

What's next:

- The Heat and Dinos battle it out on the hardwood once again on Saturday back at the Jack Simpson Gym with tip-offset for 4 p.m. PST in Calgary.
